Ali is based in Washington, DC, and writes news, features and analysis with a particular focus on US foreign policy, US politics and Middle Eastern politics. Since joining Al Jazeera in 2021, he has reported extensively on key political events in the US, including the 2022 Midterm elections, President Donald Trump's legal troubles, the US response to the war in Gaza and the 2024 presidential elections. He also occasionally contributes to sports coverage, particularly football. Previously, he has worked as a reporter at Middle East Eye and Arab American News. His work has also been published by Time Magazine. Ali led Al Jazeera’s Live page team which won an Edward R Murrow Award in 2025 for its coverage of the night of Bashar al-Assad's fall. During the run-up to the US presidential elections, Ali broke several exclusive stories on the Biden campaign's outreach to Arab communities in 2016 and 2020.
