Andrew Marshall is an editor on Al Jazeera’s Global desk, producing daily news with a particular focus on geopolitics and political risk. Now based in the UK, he has worked as a journalist for more than 30 years and reported from more than three dozen countries. Before joining Al Jazeera, Andrew worked for 17 years at Reuters, reporting from London, Dublin, Frankfurt, Jakarta and Bangkok, where he served as deputy bureau chief for Thailand and Indochina. Following the fall of Saddam Hussein in 2003, he was appointed bureau chief in Baghdad, leading a team of more than 100 journalists working in increasingly challenging conditions. In 2006, he became managing editor for the Middle East, based in Dubai, where he oversaw news coverage from 14 countries, before becoming chief correspondent for political risk in Singapore in 2008. Marshall has reported from conflict zones including East Timor, Afghanistan and Lebanon. He is the author of two books on the Thai monarchy - both banned in Thailand - and launched a successful newsletter on Southeast Asia which published significant scoops, including the exclusive report of King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s death in 2016, hours before the official announcement. He is a fellow of the Higher Education Academy, a professional recognition awarded to educators in the UK who exemplify effective teaching practices. Marshall has interviewed a diverse range of influential figures, from presidents and prime ministers to the Dalai Lama and Aung San Suu Kyi, not to mention the global sensation, Korean boyband BTS.
