Iran war: What is happening on day 39 of US-Israeli attacks?
Trump has issued a strict deadline, but a defiant Iran says the threats by the US president are ‘delusional’.

United States President Donald Trump has warned of the “complete demolition” of key Iranian infrastructure if the Strait of Hormuz is not reopened by a looming deadline. He describes Tehran’s response to a US ceasefire proposal as “significant” but ultimately “not good enough”.
Iran’s military has dismissed Trump’s threats as “delusional”, saying they cannot mask what it described as US “disgrace and humiliation” in the region, according to Iranian media.
Meanwhile, US-Israel attacks in the five-week war on Iran have intensified, with universities and oil facilities among the civilian targets. Iranian missiles and drones also continue to target sites across the Gulf.
In Iran
- Attack on Kharg oil hub: The Mehr news agency reported an attack on Iran’s oil hub on Kharg Island, “a major development if confirmed”, Al Jazeera’s Tohid Asadi said, reporting from Tehran.
- Synagogue hit in Tehran: A projectile struck a synagogue in central Tehran, with local media reporting it was destroyed.
- Strikes on Tehran airports: Israel’s military said it carried out strikes on three airports in Tehran, targeting several Iranian planes and helicopters. Local media later said the Khorramabad International Airport in western Iran was hit.
Petrochemical complex targeted: The Israeli army said it struck Iran’s largest petrochemical complex, which serves the South Pars gasfield, the world’s largest natural gas reserve, and a petrochemical compound in Shiraz in southwestern Iran.
- Power units struck in escalation: Two units that produce electricity for the South Pars gasfield were targeted in recent strikes. Iranian officials called it a “huge escalation” and a sign that the US and Israel intend to destroy the survival capabilities of the Iranian people.
- Trains cancelled: Train travel to and from Iran’s second city of Mashhad was cancelled until further notice after Israel warned Iranians not to use railways until 9pm Iran time (17:30 GMT), local media reported, citing the governor.
War diplomacy
- US ultimatum: Trump issued a deadline, threatening the “complete demolition” of Iran’s power plants and bridges if Tehran does not fully reopen the Strait of Hormuz by 8pm Washington, DC time on Tuesday (00:00 GMT). Experts said targeting civilian infrastructure is a war crime.
- Iran synagogue destroyed: US-Israeli strikes “completely destroyed” the Rafi-Nia Synagogue in Tehran, local media reported. Iran has a small Jewish community, with the majority having fled in the aftermath of the 1979 Islamic Revolution.
- Iran rejects pause offer: Iran rejected a proposal for a temporary ceasefire, arguing it would give the US and Israel time to regroup and launch further attacks and citing past ceasefire violations in Gaza and Lebanon. Instead, Iranian officials put forward a 10-point proposal calling for a comprehensive and permanent end to the war.
- Iran demands: Tehran also demanded the lifting of longstanding sanctions, a compromise on uranium enrichment and the establishment of a new order in the Strait of Hormuz.
- Turkish ship passes through strait: A third Turkish-owned ship has passed through the Strait of Hormuz, Turkiye’s Transport Minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu said.
- South Korea takes Saudi option: South Korea will send five ships to the Saudi Red Sea port of Yanbu to establish alternative oil supply routes, a governing party parliamentarian said.
- Hormuz vote at UN: The UN Security Council is to vote on Tuesday for a resolution addressing Iran’s threats to the Strait of Hormuz, diplomatic sources told AFP.

Earlier, the ministry reported intercepting up to seven ballistic missiles over the Eastern Province and debris falling near critical energy facilities.
- Bahrain: An important bridge linking the island nation to Saudi Arabia has been indefinitely closed to traffic over fears of attacks from Iran, according to reports. In a post on X, the authority overseeing the King Fahd Causeway said traffic over the bridge has been “suspended as a precautionary measure” over Iranian attacks targeting Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province.
- United Arab Emirates: The Ministry of Defence reported its air defences intercepted incoming missiles and drones originating from Iran.
- Qatar warning: Qatar warned the war was close to a threshold where it cannot be controlled, with a Foreign Ministry spokesman saying,”This is why we have been urging all parties to find a resolution to find a way of ending this war before it’s too late”.
